About
This Print

FIRST DAY was photographed on January 21, 2017, when nearly 250,000 people filled downtown Chicago for the Women’s March the day after the inauguration. I made this frame from the gangway between two moving CTA train cars as the Green Line curved over Jackson Boulevard.

From the street, the march felt loud and chaotic. From above, it became something else: a single moving body stretching through the city. The train hardware remains in the frame on purpose. It is part of the truth of where the picture was made, and part of what makes this image feel like evidence instead of nostalgia.

What felt chaotic from the street became one visible pulse from above.
