The Publication

PUBLIC RECORD documents the moments that become history before we recognize them. Two photographs from Chicago — FIRST DAY (Women’s March, January 21, 2017) and RESIDUAL (Logan Square, November 11, 2024) — made years apart in different corners of the city.

Why This Record Exists

“Both images are proof that we were physically there. That the moment happened. That history gets made in public space, not just in headlines.”

Some photographs become
public record the moment
they’re made.

Different days. Different corners of Chicago. Same undercurrent.

First Day — Chicago, January 21, 2017

First Day

A quarter million people gathered in downtown Chicago for the Women’s March the day after the inauguration. One pass over the crowd at 1/2500 of a second.

From street level, the march felt loud and chaotic. From above, it became one moving body.

Residual — Logan Square, November 11, 2024

Residual

A monument in Logan Square marked with fresh spray paint: FIGHT FASCISM. One person and a bicycle sharing the same frame.

Different day, different energy, same political undercurrent written directly into the street.
